Joy of Travel, Pt. III

The joy of travel for me is that each trip I always learn something new, even if I don’t want to.

When I checked into the Hilton Airport the other night I was asked for 3987 th time in my life if I wanted two keys. This is always reminds me of how much I miss my wife on these trips and my initial reaction is to respond that I am a loser and have no one with me...but that’s a tad too dramatic and I am sure the front desk people do not care. So I have a pat answer and simply state that “ if I need two keys my wife is going to be mad at me and will want to know what I am doing with the other one”.

But I finally met my match in Suzy at the desk who for the first time , after chuckling, said “we give you two in case you demagnetize one and it wont work”......I had never thought of that because I of course have never put my key by my cell phone, other credit cards or the worst, my magnetic show  badge with my name on it for a conference, and killed my room key. Never at midnight have I returned to my room with a dead key, or the classic, grabbed a bucket of ice in my bathrobe, and come up with the dead key upon returning. There really is nothing worse than the bathrobe trip down 16 floors at 11pm to get a new key.

So I took two keys, not in hope that Christie Brinkley gets stranded at the airport and needs somewhere to stay , but so that Suzy and the rest of the front desk don’t see me at 2am in a skimpy bathrobe or hand towel asking for a new room key......I’m learning.....
